The event took place on 28 June 2025, Saturday at USM@KL, organised by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Bournemouth University (BU), in collaboration with DAWN. It was attended by 31 Deaf individuals alongside a dozen hearing peers.

This interactive workshop brought together Deaf and hearing participants to explore the importance of nutrition and exercise for maintaining strength in older adults. The sessions focused on understanding the role of food in supporting muscle and bone health, and included a hands-on segment during the “Lunch & Learn” session to create their healthy meal using natural, colourful food and chickpea as the main protein source.

Participants gained valuable knowledge about age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia), took part in strength testing, and learned practical exercises to improve mobility and reduce the risk of falls. The workshop also provided space for open discussion, creating an inclusive and supportive environment for sharing experiences and learning together.

Participants learned that regular physical activity, especially strength-based exercises, is crucial in preventing sarcopenia—a condition marked by reduced muscle mass and strength due to ageing. The workshop conducted by Dr. Vina Tan (PhD) from the School of Health Sciences, USM, highlighted that muscle loss can begin as early as age 30 and accelerates after age 60 years. By incorporating consistent strength training and staying active, older adults can maintain independence and improve their overall quality of life.

In addition, Ms. Lee Ann Kee, USM Master student,  addressed the changing nutritional needs of older adults and emphasised the importance of high-quality protein (availability of nine essential amino acids), calcium and vitamin D, to build muscle and bone health. Practical dietary tips were shared, including eating smaller meals more often, staying hydrated, and reducing intake of processed foods, sugar, and salt. The message was clear: combining proper nutrition with strength training is key to staying strong, healthy, and independent in later life.

The workshop concluded with participants taking home their coloured resistance bands as a gift and had a serving of protein drink as part of their post-strength training nutrition to optimize muscle development.

The workshop was part of the UK–Malaysia Going Global Partnerships 2023 grant, awarded to partners, BU and USM.
