On 21 and 22 June 2025, 38 Deaf individuals from across Malaysia came together for a two-day workshop on political participation, organised by EMPOWER, supported by JUPEBIM, and held in collaboration with DAWN. The workshop aimed to strengthen the knowledge, confidence, and capacity of the Deaf community to take part in political processes and understand how the government works.
Throughout the workshop, participants learned about human rights, gender equality, the roles of federal, state, and local governments, how laws are made, and how elections are conducted in Malaysia. For many, it was their first time learning about these important topics in a fully accessible and Deaf-friendly environment using Malaysian Sign Language (BIM).
A special moment during the workshop was the visit from YB Tan Sri Johari, Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, who shared his journey in politics. His presence made a strong impact, helping participants understand the realities of political leadership and the importance of representation.
The workshop inspired many participants to reflect on the future of Deaf leadership in Malaysia. They expressed hope to see more Deaf individuals in roles such as senators and community leaders, actively shaping policies that affect not only the Deaf community but all persons with disabilities. Some also voiced concern that current systems often fail to fully consider the needs of disabled people, and believed that having Deaf leaders in decision-making positions would bring more inclusive and effective solutions.
This workshop was more than just a learning experience—it was a powerful step forward. It gave participants the tools to think critically about politics, to speak up for their rights, and to see themselves as future changemakers. The organisers hope this will be the beginning of greater Deaf participation in politics and policy in Malaysia.
